Evaluation of the 7 questions

Music magazine evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In my opinion, my magazine does conform to the codes and conventions of traditional hip-hop / R&B magazines. I say this because I drew upon a lot of inspiration from typical magazines such as VIBE and FADER which are R&B magazines which challenge conventions of other media products in the industry. Whilst researching VIBE magazine in particular I learnt that they felt very strongly about self expression and accepting people no matter if they conform to social norms or not and I feel that their magazine is all about defying social expectations and norms and  expressing an alternative lifestyle and feeling comfortable and confident in that. I also say this knowing that African Americans are a ethnic minority group which is he target audience of these magazines, which shows that these sort of media products exist not only to gain success and millions of readers because they aim themselves at a small social group and it shows that they really want to change people's views. Therefore I think my magazine does challenge forms of stereotypical teen magazines because it's not all about celebrities and pop gossips which from my research I have found to be the most popular magazine within my targeted age range, but I decided to aim my product at a small interest group because I kept in mind the conventions of my genre and how they appeal to their audience instead. I used things such a close up images of an artist/ model of colour and created a storyline for my feature article which portrays someone in a new light not what people assume which challenges new ideas and point of views. I got very heavy inspiration for the layout of my magazine from FADER magazine because I really enjoyed how they conveyed their artists and I used the same technique for my masthead as well as my main images which made everything very clean cut but my artist was very edgy.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product is aimed at 16-30 year olds (unisex) that are interested in the hip-hop /R&B industry. I created my magazine with the intent that the topics and presentation I used would appeal to my target audience. I catered towards my audience by using the same language they would use and trends and popular culture they would relate to as a way to sell my product; I used a lot of slang in my feature article for example because it makes the artist relate and appeal to the audience because his language isn't alien and therefore my audience can understand it. I also used fashion as a way to represent my targeted social group because in today's society, everybody cares about what they look like and how they are presented so I incorporated that mis-en-scene into my magazine by styling it in a way which would inform and inspire my readers. On my front cover and the rest of the photographs I chose to represent my artist, his facial expressions are very serious and somber because I wanted him to come across as very unapologetic and he almost has a very hard exterior, unlike let's say pop artists which are usually represented as fun, innocent ad approachable. I also gave my artist a stage name JERRY STACKHOUSE. because it gives an element of mystery and privacy which people will intrigue people.

3. What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?

In terms of distributing my product, I would like to use an institution such as Bauer media group as a key distributor because from my research they are very successful institution who already distribute very popular magazines and they do it through a number of platforms. I would like to focus on marketing my product online and on the internet because technology is growing and now millions of people use their smartphones and computers everyday which is why a lot of magazines and newspapers end up going digital. I however wouldn't go completely digital, I would still like to expose my magazine on shelves in newsagents and supermarkets because it's a typical way to buy a magazine, also a lot of people still like to have a hard copy of a magazine and actually read through it and have a physical copy.

4. Who would be the audience of your media product ?

The target audience of my media product is 16-30 year olds who have a keen interest in the hip-hop / R&B industry and culture. My magazine is accommodating to both sexes and all races, cultures, ethnicities etc. Because I believe liking a certain type of genre shouldn't depend on if your male or female because it is music and it shouldn't have a certain sex, if lyou like listening to it then you can. I also believe in equality and   I think that my media product will be a platform to promote that and it will create awareness as well as entertainment.

5. How did you attract / address your audience ?

I attracted my audience by including topics and advertised things they would be interested in such as fashion, hip-hop music, culture etc.. I needed to make my magazine relatable for people to want to buy it because you wouldn't want to read a magazine you aren't interested in. I used a very close up image in my cover page which created direct address with the audience which makes it personal. In my magazine I used both female and male images, I did this to attract my target audience because it is a unisex product and they would be able to connect with the images. I also advertised social media accounts that my audience can interact with because internet is a big market in this generation and millions of teenagers use it and read magazines online so its a perfect way to attract my audience.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

From the process of constructing my media product I have learnt a lot about the technologies used to create magazines and I have used many different software's to create it. I first started by using a images I took on a DSLR camera and uploading them onto Photoshop to start editing them, this is where I experimented with different tools to enhance my images and make them very clean and sleek. I then learnt how to use the InDesign package to create my actual magazine, I used an alternative layout instead of the regular magazine layout templates because I felt that it suited the genre of my magazine more. I made sure that I created large boxes on my page which would help my images insert onto the page accurately. But I used the application to follow some conventions of a magazines layout for example I used it to create three columns to keep my text in straight clear columns. I feel confident with my knowledge in both applications now that I could use them in the future with any other projects.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at my preliminary task which was the Stockley fashion magazine, I feel that I have progressed highly with my media knowledge and it helped me a lot when completing my final magazine design product. Firstly I learnt the basics of Photoshop and InDesign then I gradually learnt to advance which helped me create my final product. I also can edit my photos with ease now and I feel confident in doing so. In my opinion you can see a clear difference in my two magazines because I believe that my technique drastically improved within my work and it made my final product much better. Overall I think the new skills I learnt using all of the technologies will benefit me a lot in the future.
