Contents Page analysis

Vogues contents page has the main image as Gigi Hadid as the only image and it is seen large on page. It is a long shot, full body image which the model has dressed proactively, showing a lot of skin which is a marketing technique because sex sells.


The title of the magazine is in bold text on a white background making it readable for the viewers and more eye appealing to all viewers. There is one clear column down the page which gives the reader a clear indication of what is in the magazine. The colour scheme of the page is mostly black white and red, the red is a pop of colour to show the main headers and it attracts the reader to the bright colour against the black and white lettering. There is a small section in the bottom right hand corner which says “subscribe to vogue” which is used here with usually the editor’s letter or another type of information on contacting the magazine which tries to create loyal readers because they would always be reading the magazine.  It the text ‘cover stories’ in red and in capitals which again is a vibrant colour compared to the black/ grey background and white text underneath it, this shows the reader a clear context of the magazine and what to expect to read.

The background of the page is plain white which is very simplistic and chic. It is also a good canvas to make everything stand out on top of it. Vogue is an extremely iconic fashion magazine and it is known for its high fashion content and sleek designs of the pages; this is expressed in the contents page which is one of the second most important pages in a magazine since it expresses the main contents of the magazine and it is vital for it to hook the reader into wanting to read on.

Feature Article analysis

The feature article for ‘Vogue’ magazine uses many different media techniques to appeal to the target audience of the magazine. For example they use the same plain white canvas as the background for their articles which creates a theme throughout. They have also stuck with the same colour palette which is black white and red. The red has highlighted a block of text to draw attention to it which says “I love people who really play with fashion. I’m loving hats, because I wear them more than anyone else!” which is a quote from the article which the editor wanted to bring attention to. There is a mixture of images in this article which are surrounded by a white border which give the induvial images an almost Polaroid effect. The text in the article is in two columns which is a very clear, clean way to layout the text, the text also doesn’t overlap any images. There are black boxes around the article which indicate annotations to the photographs surrounding them, and also credits to the photographer, the black is a prominent colour compared to the colourful photographs and plain background.

Analysis of the lead feature article In Vibe’s November 2004 issue Nelly was their cover star. He also had an 8 page spread feature article in the magazine. The first double page is two images which one of which is of Nelly. It had reference to the image on the front cover with a similar image of him with black writing over his topless frame. He is making the letter ‘X’ out of his arms which is similar to the shape on the other page which had text written in it saying – “MARKED MAN he’s been called everything from a misogynist to a sell-out. Evaluation of the 7 questions

Music magazine evaluation 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  In my opinion, my magazine does conform to the codes and conventions of traditional hip-hop / R&B magazines. I say this because I drew upon a lot of inspiration from typical magazines such as VIBE and FADER which are R&B magazines which challenge conventions of other media products in the industry. Whilst researching VIBE magazine in particular I learnt that they felt very strongly about self expression and accepting people no matter if they conform to social norms or not and I feel that their magazine is all about defying social expectations and norms and  expressing an alternative lifestyle and feeling comfortable and confident in that. I also say this knowing that African Americans are a ethnic minority group which is he target audience of these magazines, which shows that these sort of media products exist not only to gain success
